LG Display has announced a troubling financial report for the third quarter of 2026, revealing that its operating profit has plummeted by 42% compared to the same period last year. The company attributed this decline to a combination of a weak South Korean won and rising costs associated with semiconductor components, commonly referred to as 'chipflation.'
In its consolidated results, LG Display reported a revenue of 6.277 trillion won and an operating profit of 250.6 billion won, marking a 9.8% decrease in revenue and a staggering 41.9% drop in operating profit year-on-year. The decline in profitability is largely due to the unfavorable exchange rate between the won and the dollar, which has reduced the revenue from exports priced in dollars.
The average won-dollar exchange rate fell by 5.6% in Q3, exacerbating the financial strain on the company. LG Display's CFO, Kim Seong-hyun, noted that the display industry is particularly sensitive to exchange rate fluctuations, as a significant portion of transactions are dollar-denominated.
Despite these challenges, LG Display has seen an increase in shipments of large and mobile-sized OLED products, benefiting from seasonal demand. The company plans to focus on enhancing its product portfolio with high-value-added items and improving operational efficiency to navigate the current economic landscape.
Looking ahead, LG Display aims to strengthen its competitiveness in the OLED market and adapt to changing consumer demands while maintaining a focus on cost innovation and technological advancements.
