LG Display has returned to profitability in Q3, but earnings have dropped significantly compared to last year.
LG Display has announced a return to operating profit in the third quarter of 2026, driven by strong seasonal demand for OLED panels. However, the company's earnings fell by 42% compared to the same period last year, primarily due to a weaker dollar and rising component costs.
The South Korean display manufacturer reported an operating profit of 250.6 billion won ($189.3 million) for the July-September period, a significant recovery from a loss of 107.7 billion won in the previous quarter. Revenue also saw a 12% increase from the second quarter, totaling 6.28 trillion won, although it marked a 10% decline year-on-year.
Despite the quarterly recovery, LG Display's operating profit was down from 431 billion won in Q3 2025. The company attributed this decline to lower shipments of mid-sized LCD panels, as it shifts focus to more profitable OLED products. The fluctuating exchange rates and increased semiconductor prices further impacted profitability.
LG Display has been restructuring its operations around OLED technology, following three consecutive years of operating losses. The company aims to expand its premium OLED offerings for smartphones and televisions, as well as gaming monitors, to enhance its market position. CFO Kim Sung-hyun emphasized the need to strengthen business competitiveness amid external uncertainties.
