On November 4, senior officials from the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps visited the HD Hyundai shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, to evaluate the country's naval shipbuilding capabilities. This visit underscores the strengthening defense cooperation between South Korea and the United States, particularly in light of the ongoing 'Make American Shipbuilding Great Again' initiative.
The delegation included key figures such as Brendan P. Rogers, the U.S. Navy's Assistant Secretary for Energy, Installations, and Environment, alongside Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Andrew M. Niebel and Maj. Gen. Valerie A. Jackson. Their assessment focused on naval shipbuilding capabilities, installation infrastructure, and logistics support in South Korea.
The visit is part of broader efforts to enhance maritime sustainment and operational readiness, reinforcing the alliance between the two nations. In October, HD Hyundai announced a partnership with U.S. engineering firm Kiewit to establish a new shipyard in the United States, with construction set to begin next year and full operations expected by 2029.
This collaboration reflects a mutual commitment to advancing shipbuilding capabilities and ensuring maritime security in the region, highlighting the strategic importance of U.S.-South Korea defense relations.
