The South Korean won has reached its highest value against the U.S. dollar in over two years.
On October 19, 2026, the South Korean won surged to its highest level against the U.S. dollar in more than two years. The currency was quoted at 1,330.3 won per dollar, reflecting a rise of 1.1 won from the previous trading session.
This increase is attributed to significant dollar sales by local exporters and foreign institutional investors. At one point, the won traded at 1,327.6 per dollar, marking the strongest exchange rate since October 2, 2024.
Finance Minister Lee Hyoung-il noted that the exchange rate is aligning with South Korea's economic fundamentals, indicating a positive trend for the local economy. Despite foreign investors selling a net 37.8 billion won worth of local shares, the Korea Composite Stock Price Index still gained 1.76% to close at 5,768.01.
The strengthening of the won could have implications for trade and investment flows, as it reflects confidence in the South Korean economy amidst global market fluctuations.
