SK hynix and the South Korean government are collaborating to offer 2 trillion won in loan guarantees to semiconductor suppliers.
In a significant move to bolster the domestic semiconductor industry, SK hynix Inc. has announced a partnership with the South Korean government to provide 2 trillion won (approximately $1.5 billion) in loan guarantees for local semiconductor suppliers.
The announcement was made during a signing ceremony held at SK hynix's semiconductor cluster promotion center in Yongin, south of Seoul. This initiative aims to strengthen the domestic chip supply chain amidst increasing global competition in the semiconductor market.
Under the agreement, SK hynix, along with four major banks, will contribute a total of 100 billion won to support the program. The Korea Trade Insurance Corp. (K-SURE) will provide up to 2 trillion won in loan guarantees specifically for suppliers of semiconductor materials, parts, and equipment.
Suppliers recommended by SK hynix will enjoy benefits such as higher loan limits, interest rate reductions of up to 2.5 percentage points, and an extended guarantee period from one to three years. This initiative is part of a broader government strategy to enhance financing access for smaller companies collaborating with major manufacturers.
Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan emphasized the government's commitment to expanding financial support for the semiconductor sector to over 5 trillion won, while also enhancing research, investment, and workforce training initiatives. The government plans to extend similar support to other sectors, including defense and biotechnology, aiming for a total support package of around 10 trillion won by year-end.
