South Korea is accelerating its nuclear submarine project, known as the Jang Bogo N program, to enhance its defense capabilities against North Korean ballistic missile submarines.
This initiative comes amid escalating military tensions on the Korean Peninsula, as North Korea continues to develop its missile capabilities. The new submarines, which could weigh over 8,000 tons, are designed for extended surveillance and strike missions.
The South Korean Navy aims to maintain a sustained presence near North Korean waters without the limitations of conventional submarines. The project is expected to significantly enhance South Korea's ability to monitor and respond to potential threats from North Korea.
However, the success of the program hinges on negotiations with the United States regarding the supply of nuclear fuel. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration has already approved the basic acquisition strategy, paving the way for design work to commence in 2027.
The first submarine is projected to be launched around 2035, with full operational capability anticipated in the late 2030s. This marks a significant shift in South Korea's naval capabilities, transitioning from conventional to nuclear-powered submarines to bolster its maritime security.
