In September 2023, online shopping sales in South Korea experienced a notable increase of 4.1% compared to the previous year. This rise is attributed to a surge in consumer demand for automobiles and food delivery services, reflecting changing purchasing habits in the post-pandemic landscape.
According to data from the Ministry of Data and Statistics, the total value of online shopping transactions reached approximately 24.97 trillion won (around $18.7 billion). This marks an increase of 975.8 billion won from the same month last year.
The automotive sector saw a remarkable growth of 30.9% year-on-year, with spending reaching 1.27 trillion won. Additionally, expenditures on food delivery services rose by 4% to 3.78 trillion won, indicating a sustained preference for convenience among consumers.
Mobile shopping also played a significant role in this growth, with sales via smartphones and tablets increasing by 5.4% to 19.08 trillion won, accounting for 76.4% of total online sales.
