During a surprise visit to Dandong, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un vowed to enhance relations with China.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un made an unexpected visit to Dandong, China, where he pledged to strengthen the longstanding ties between the two nations. This visit marks Kim's first trip to China since September 2025 and his sixth since taking power in 2011.
Accompanied by senior officials, including his sister Kim Yo-jong and Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, Kim met with Wang Huning, a senior Chinese political figure. The visit coincided with the 76th anniversary of China's entry into the Korean War, during which Kim paid tribute to Chinese soldiers who fought alongside North Korea.
Kim emphasized the historical bond between the two countries, stating, "We will always remember the history when the excellent sons and daughters of the Chinese people helped our revolution at the cost of their blood." He also attended a banquet hosted by Wang and visited a local bus factory.
The trip comes as North Korea seeks to reinforce its relationship with China amid a cooling of ties due to North Korea's increasing alignment with Russia. Experts suggest that while Kim's visit did not include a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, it serves as a message to the United States regarding potential diplomatic discussions.
