Kakao has entered a strategic collaboration with OpenAI, the first of its kind in Korea, to weave advanced artificial intelligence into KakaoTalk and other core services. The deal accelerates Kakao's ambition to become an AI-native company.
Kakao, the operator of Korea's dominant messaging platform KakaoTalk, has announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI, describing it as the first agreement of its kind between the U.S. AI firm and a Korean company. The two sides unveiled the partnership at a joint press conference at the Plaza Hotel in central Seoul.
Under the arrangement, Kakao will draw on OpenAI's advanced models to build and refine services tailored to Korean users. A centerpiece is Kanana, a new communication service positioned as a user-friendly "AI Agent" that delivers personalized, context-aware responses, which will be powered by OpenAI technology.
The companies also plan to expand OpenAI's integration across Kakao's digital ecosystem, including flagship products such as KakaoTalk. Internally, Kakao intends to roll out ChatGPT Enterprise to employees to streamline workflows and lift productivity, while pursuing joint product development that combines the strengths of both organizations.
The tie-up builds on Kakao's "AI Model Orchestration" strategy, first outlined at its if(kakaoAI) developer conference last October. The approach blends Kakao's proprietary models with leading external APIs, and executives say selecting OpenAI's technology will help deliver best-in-class AI experiences.
Kakao Chief Executive Shina Chung said the collaboration marks "a turning point" in the company's efforts to bring the future closer, adding that it would advance Kakao's orchestration strategy. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman praised Kakao's record of innovative user experiences and said he was eager to bring advanced AI to the platform's millions of users.
The partnership feeds into a broader national conversation about sovereign AI, as Korean firms seek to secure homegrown capabilities while tapping global technology leaders. For Kakao, the deal represents a decisive step in its transformation into an AI-native company built around everyday communication.
