Hyundai Engineering has signed agreements with US small modular reactor developers to enhance its role in the global SMR market.
Hyundai Engineering has taken a significant step towards establishing a presence in the global small modular reactor (SMR) market by signing memorandums of understanding (MoUs) with US developers NANO Nuclear Energy and ARC Clean Technology.
The partnership with NANO Nuclear focuses on the KRONOS micro modular reactor project at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This collaboration aims to combine NANO's advanced reactor development with Hyundai's extensive engineering and project management capabilities.
NANO Nuclear's KRONOS reactor is designed to be a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor, and the MoU outlines plans for project execution, procurement readiness, and logistics. The agreement allows for potential expansion of Hyundai's role in architecture, engineering, and construction management as the project progresses.
In addition to NANO Nuclear, Hyundai Engineering has also partnered with ARC Clean Technology, which is developing the ARC-100 sodium-cooled fast reactor. This collaboration is expected to enhance Hyundai's capabilities in fourth-generation reactor technology and expand its business in the nuclear power sector.
Hyundai Engineering's CEO, Woo-Jeong Joo, emphasized the importance of these collaborations in building valuable project experience and strengthening their position in the global nuclear market.
