Hyundai Engineering has signed multiple MOUs with US nuclear developers to enter the global small modular reactor market.

Hyundai Engineering has taken a significant step towards international expansion by signing multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with US-based next-generation nuclear developers, including Nano Nuclear Energy (NNE) and ARC Clean Technology. This initiative aims to tap into the burgeoning global small modular reactor (SMR) market, which is gaining traction as a sustainable energy solution amidst rising power demands driven by advancements in AI and data centers.

The signing ceremony for the MOU with NNE took place at Hyundai Engineering's headquarters in Seoul, where CEO Joo Woo-jung and NNE CEO James Walker discussed plans for collaboration on a micro modular reactor (MMR) project at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. This project aims to provide heat and contribute to carbon neutrality on campus, showcasing Hyundai's commitment to innovative energy solutions.

Later, Hyundai Engineering also signed an MOU with ARC, focusing on a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) project. ARC is developing the ARC-100 reactor and plans to build a commercial demonstration plant in partnership with Battelle Energy Alliance at the Idaho National Laboratory. This collaboration is expected to explore new business opportunities as the project evolves.

These agreements position Hyundai Engineering to leverage its expertise in nuclear design and large-scale project execution, aiming to become a key player in the next-generation nuclear market. A company official stated, "Our accumulated expertise in nuclear design has laid the foundation for cooperation with global SMR companies," emphasizing their goal to strengthen project capabilities and establish themselves as a trusted partner in the SMR sector.
