Hyundai Engineering has signed MOUs with U.S. SMR firms to advance fourth-generation reactors.
Hyundai Engineering is making a significant move into the nuclear energy sector by partnering with U.S. small modular reactor (SMR) developers. On October 27, the company announced that it has signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with Nano Nuclear Energy (NNE) and ARC Clean Technology.
The agreement with NNE, signed on October 23, focuses on the 'KRONOS MMR first-unit project' at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. NNE is developing a micro modular reactor that utilizes helium gas as a coolant. Hyundai Engineering will contribute to engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for reactor auxiliary facilities and modular design reviews.
Additionally, the MOU with ARC aims to support a sodium-cooled fast reactor project, specifically the 100 MWe 'ARC-100' at the Idaho National Laboratory. Both companies will explore EPC collaboration based on project developments.
This strategic partnership highlights Hyundai Engineering's commitment to next-generation reactor technologies, enhancing its capabilities in both design and EPC. Since establishing its nuclear division in 1985, the company has completed 254 nuclear projects worldwide, showcasing its extensive experience in the field.
