The U.S. Justice Department has taken action against North Korean IT schemes affecting over 70 companies.

The U.S. Justice Department has recently imposed restrictions on North Korean remote IT worker schemes that have impacted more than 70 American firms. This crackdown is indicative of rising tensions and the ongoing effects of sanctions on North Korea's international operations.

According to the department, these schemes have generated millions of dollars allegedly benefiting the North Korean regime. The coordinated law enforcement actions included an indictment, two arrests, and the seizure of 187 computers used by North Korean IT workers to secure fraudulent employment.

Assistant Attorney General for National Security, John Eisenberg, stated that North Korea's regime exploits these IT worker schemes to raise funds for various illicit activities, including the development of weapons that could threaten the U.S. and its allies.

The North Korean IT workers reportedly used stolen identities and VPNs to obtain jobs at American companies, relying on U.S.-based facilitators to manage their earnings. The indictment revealed that over 70 companies across various sectors were affected, with approximately $3 million believed to have been funneled to North Korean-controlled entities.

In response to these actions, U.S. authorities have also arrested two American nationals on charges related to wire fraud and money laundering, highlighting the extensive network involved in these schemes.
