South Korea's Unification Minister calls for dialogue with North Korea regarding the inter-Korean border.
On October 28, 2026, South Korea's Unification Minister Chung Dong-young urged North Korea to engage in discussions about the inter-Korean border. He emphasized that dialogue is essential for maintaining peace and stability in the region.
The call for talks follows a recent incident involving a land mine blast in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that injured three South Korean soldiers. In response, Seoul proposed military discussions to verify the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) and restore communication channels between the two Koreas.
During an address at the DMZ Open Eco Peace Forum, Chung highlighted the importance of aligning positions on the MDL and establishing a communication system to prevent accidental clashes. He expressed concern that the peace achieved last year is now at risk due to rising tensions.
Chung hopes for a positive response from North Korea, reaffirming the South's commitment to safeguarding lives and working towards a lasting peace by replacing the current armistice with a more stable peace system.
