U.S. experts suggest that China may not play a mediating role in a potential summit between Trump and Kim.
Recent assessments by U.S. experts indicate that China is unlikely to mediate a potential summit between former President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. This perspective highlights a notable shift in the diplomatic dynamics surrounding U.S.-North Korea relations.
Sydney Seiler, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), expressed skepticism about China's willingness to facilitate talks, stating that neither North Korea nor other key players feel a pressing need for renewed discussions. He remarked, "None of them is feeling a sense of urgency... that the U.S. and DPRK need to talk right now."
Victor Cha, also from CSIS, echoed this sentiment, suggesting that while China might provide a venue for discussions, it is unlikely to engage in substantial diplomatic efforts to arrange a meeting. He noted, "They're really not interested in doing any of the heavy lifting."
The experts believe that even if Trump and Kim were to meet, their relationship could deteriorate again within months without significant agreements. However, there is hope for progress if North Korea is willing to negotiate on key issues like arms control.
Kim's recent visit to Dandong, China, further complicates the situation, as it signals his intent to maintain strong ties with both China and Russia, potentially impacting the dynamics of any future summit.
