U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has emphasized the importance of restoring communication channels between North and South Korea, particularly in light of rising tensions in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
During a recent press briefing, U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric conveyed Guterres's concerns regarding the situation on the Korean Peninsula, highlighting the potential for escalation of tensions across the DMZ. Dujarric stated, "The Secretary-General encourages relevant parties to initiate the resumption of communication channels, including military-to-military communications, to avoid unintended accidents or miscalculations."
The call for dialogue comes after a land mine explosion on September 21 injured three South Korean soldiers, raising alarms about safety and security in the region. A joint investigation by South Korea's military and the U.N. Command attributed the explosion to antipersonnel mines allegedly planted by North Korea, a claim that Pyongyang has denied, labeling it as a fabrication.
In response to the incident, South Korea has sought international support, raising the issue with the U.N. Security Council and urging North Korea to take responsibility. Dujarric reiterated that diplomatic engagement remains crucial for reducing tensions and achieving lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.
