A U.S. expert urges South Korea to strengthen sanctions cooperation with the U.S. and Japan following a significant cryptocurrency theft.
A recent major cryptocurrency theft from Binance, attributed to North Korean hackers, has prompted calls for South Korea to enhance its collaborative efforts with the United States and Japan.
Ari Redbord, a leading expert from TRM Labs, emphasized the need for unilateral and multilateral sanctions to effectively counter North Korea's illicit activities. He stated that South Korea should deepen its joint work with both nations to increase pressure on Pyongyang.
The theft, which involved over $6 billion in cryptocurrency, has raised alarms about North Korea's capabilities in cybercrime. In response, South Korean financial regulators have convened meetings with cryptocurrency exchanges to bolster security measures. However, Redbord noted that the response could be quicker and more coordinated to prevent further illicit transactions.
While discussions on potential sanctions have yet to commence, the South Korean foreign ministry is reviewing possible additional measures, including unilateral cyber sanctions. Redbord highlighted the importance of targeting the laundering networks that facilitate North Korea's access to converted funds.
He concluded by urging South Korea to establish protocols for freezing assets in collaboration with major cryptocurrency exchanges, emphasizing the urgency of swift action to recover stolen funds.
