South Korea has called on North Korea to take accountability for a recent mine explosion that injured soldiers.
In a recent session at the United Nations, South Korea urged North Korea to take 'responsible measures' following a mine explosion incident. This explosion, which occurred on September 21, injured three South Korean soldiers near the inter-Korean border and was attributed to a land mine deliberately planted by North Korean forces.
South Korean Ambassador to the UN, Cha Ji-hoon, emphasized that a joint investigation by the South Korean military and the United Nations Command confirmed the incident as a violation of the Armistice Agreement. Cha stated, 'We urge the DPRK to cease such escalatory actions upon apology and take responsible measures.'
In response, a North Korean representative dismissed the accusations, claiming they were an attempt to misrepresent their military actions. The representative stated, 'This is no more than a poor trick of the ROK military to shift the blame of its own onto the DPRK.'
The two Koreas also expressed opposing views on North Korea's nuclear weapons program, with South Korea reaffirming its commitment to nuclear nonproliferation. Cha called for North Korea to comply with international treaties regarding nuclear weapons.
The ongoing tensions highlight the fragile state of inter-Korean relations and the challenges faced in achieving lasting peace on the peninsula.
