South Korea's ambassador to the United Nations, Cha Ji-hoon, has been appointed as the co-chair of a significant U.N. initiative focused on artificial intelligence (AI) governance. This appointment underscores South Korea's growing role in international technology cooperation.
The announcement was made on October 20, 2026, with Cha sharing the co-chair position with Mutryce Agatha Williams, the permanent representative of Saint Kitts and Nevis. They will lead the preparations for the upcoming Global Dialogue on AI Governance, scheduled for May 3-4, 2027.
This dialogue aims to unite governments and various stakeholders to explore both the opportunities and challenges presented by rapidly advancing AI technology. The initiative was established following a U.N. General Assembly resolution passed in August 2025, which seeks to create a platform for discussions among governments, the private sector, civil society, and researchers.
As South Korea aspires to become one of the world's leading AI powerhouses under the current administration, this role is expected to position the country as a key player in shaping future international discussions on AI governance.
