South Korea's exports reached a historic $115.3 billion in October 2023, marking a remarkable 93.7% increase compared to the same month last year. This surge is primarily attributed to a significant rise in semiconductor shipments, which have seen robust global demand.
According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources, the increase in exports is further supported by ongoing investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure by major tech companies. This trend has positively impacted the overall trade balance, leading to a trade surplus of $42.5 billion despite a 36% rise in imports, which totaled $72.78 billion.
Semiconductors, a key component of South Korea's economy, saw exports skyrocket by 259% to $56.4 billion. Other sectors also experienced growth; for instance, petroleum product exports rose by 80% to $6.92 billion, while petrochemical products increased by 27.5% to $4 billion. Notably, cosmetics exports surged by 57.5% to $1.44 billion, driven by demand from China, the U.S., and the EU.
Exports to China, a major trading partner, soared by 133.6% to $26.98 billion, reflecting strong shipments of semiconductors and wireless communication equipment. Additionally, exports to the United States jumped by 185.8% to $24.9 billion, bolstered by high demand for semiconductors and AI-related technologies.
This record-breaking performance in October highlights the resilience of South Korea's export-driven economy and its pivotal role in the global semiconductor market.
