South Korea has reported a remarkable increase in its exports for October 2023, reaching a record high of $115.3 billion. This represents a staggering 93.7% increase compared to the same month last year, largely fueled by robust sales in the semiconductor sector.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources attributed this surge to strong global demand for semiconductors, alongside significant investments by major tech companies in artificial intelligence infrastructure. Cumulative exports for the January-October period have surpassed $900 billion for the first time, with projections suggesting that annual exports could hit $1 trillion as soon as November if the current trend continues.
In terms of specific sectors, semiconductor exports skyrocketed by 259% year-on-year, amounting to $56.4 billion in October. Other sectors also saw impressive growth; petroleum product exports increased by 80% to $6.92 billion, while exports of petrochemical products rose by 27.5% to $4 billion. The cosmetics sector also thrived, with a 57.5% increase in exports to $1.44 billion, driven by rising demand from China, the United States, and the European Union.
Exports to China, a key market, soared by 133.6% to $26.98 billion, marking the fifth consecutive month that shipments to China exceeded $20 billion. Shipments to the United States also experienced a significant boost, climbing 185.8% to $24.9 billion, fueled by demand for semiconductors and AI-related technologies.
Despite these positive figures, Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan cautioned about the uncertain global trade environment, highlighting challenges faced by small and medium-sized enterprises amid rising protectionism and geopolitical tensions. The government plans to enhance trade cooperation with major partners to mitigate these challenges.
