On October 9, senior defense officials from South Korea and Japan convened in Tokyo to reaffirm their commitment to cooperation in addressing the escalating threats posed by North Korea. The meeting, which involved South Korea's Vice Defense Minister Lee Doo-hee and his Japanese counterpart Atsushi Ando, underscored the necessity of close bilateral security collaboration.
During the discussions, the two officials highlighted the importance of coordination not only between their nations but also among South Korea, the United States, and Japan. This trilateral approach aims to effectively respond to North Korea's evolving nuclear and missile capabilities amid a rapidly changing international security landscape.
Vice Minister Lee's visit to Japan was part of a two-day trip, which included a courtesy call on Japanese Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi. The invitation for this visit was extended by Minister Ando, who had previously visited Seoul for security policy consultations.
The officials agreed to enhance defense cooperation, particularly in advanced technology sectors such as artificial intelligence and unmanned systems. This forward-looking approach aims to strengthen their collective defense capabilities against the backdrop of a serious security situation on the Korean Peninsula.
