South Korea's exports rose 52.3 percent from a year earlier in the first 20 days of July, reaching $54.9 billion, as semiconductor shipments nearly tripled on the back of surging global demand tied to artificial intelligence, according to data released by the Korea Customs Service.
Semiconductors remained the standout performer, with exports jumping 180 percent on-year to $22.1 billion, underscoring how central Korean memory chipmakers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix have become to the worldwide buildout of AI infrastructure. The scale of the increase suggests that demand for high-bandwidth memory and other advanced chips used in AI servers and data centers continues to run well ahead of supply.
Other sectors posted more mixed results. Petroleum product exports climbed 33.4 percent to $3.41 billion, while shipbuilding exports rose sharply, up 70.8 percent to $2.44 billion, and steel exports gained 11.1 percent to $2.64 billion. Automobile exports, however, slipped 10.6 percent to $3.24 billion, a rare soft spot in an otherwise strong export report.
By destination, shipments to China nearly doubled to $13.3 billion, while exports to the United States rose 39.6 percent to $8.96 billion, pointing to robust demand from Korea's two largest trading partners despite ongoing global trade friction and tariff uncertainty.
Imports over the same 20-day period increased 20 percent on-year to $42.7 billion, leaving South Korea with a trade surplus of $12.2 billion for the period. Cumulative exports for the year through July 20 totaled $551.2 billion, up 48.7 percent from the same period last year, putting the country on pace for another record export year.
The figures reinforce South Korea's position as a key beneficiary of the global rush to build out AI computing capacity, with semiconductor exports increasingly serving as a bellwether for both the health of the domestic economy and the broader trajectory of the AI industry worldwide.
