South Korea is intensifying its diplomatic efforts to secure an apology from Ukraine concerning the recent disclosure of North Korean prisoners of war (POWs). This situation has escalated tensions between the two nations, as South Korea's foreign ministry reiterated its stance on the matter.
During a press briefing, ministry spokesperson Park Doo-soon expressed hopes for a peaceful resolution to ongoing issues, emphasizing that consultations with Ukraine are ongoing. This statement follows comments from Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, who claimed that the situation had been resolved, attributing misunderstandings to differing interpretations of confidentiality agreements during the POW transfer.
The diplomatic conflict arose when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed the transfer of two North Korean soldiers during a speech at the U.N. General Assembly last month. These soldiers had been captured while fighting for Russia and were transferred to South Korea in mid-September. South Korea alleges that a nondisclosure agreement was established to protect the soldiers and their families, which Ukraine reportedly breached.
In response to the disclosure, South Korea recalled its ambassador to Ukraine, signaling its discontent with the situation. Despite Ukraine's assertion that the matter is resolved, South Korea maintains its demand for an official explanation and apology. Park stated that both sides are in communication to address and resolve these pressing issues, hoping for a positive response from Ukraine.
