South Korea is contemplating co-sponsoring a U.N. resolution on human rights violations in North Korea.
On October 29, 2026, South Korea's unification ministry announced it is in discussions with relevant government agencies regarding the potential co-sponsorship of a U.N. resolution focused on human rights in North Korea. An official indicated that while specifics are still under consideration, a decision will be made soon.
The resolution is currently being reviewed by the Third Committee of the U.N. General Assembly in New York, which will continue its discussions through next month. South Korea had previously co-sponsored a resolution adopted by the U.N. Human Rights Council in March, which condemned North Korea for its extensive human rights violations.
Unification Minister Chung Dong-young expressed concerns that co-sponsoring the resolution might provoke a negative response from North Korea, which views such actions as hostile. In response, the foreign ministry stated that it is evaluating various options to enhance international cooperation for improving human rights conditions in North Korea.
Historically, South Korea has co-sponsored resolutions addressing North Korean human rights issues at both the U.N. Human Rights Council and the General Assembly since the current administration took office. The ongoing consultations among relevant ministries will determine the country's stance on this year's resolution.
