Samsung C&T is pursuing approval for an 800 MWh battery energy storage system in Victoria, Australia.

Samsung C&T Renewable Energy Australia has submitted plans to develop an 800 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in southwest Victoria, specifically near the town of Warragul. This project, known as the Darnum BESS, aims to enhance the integration of renewable energy into the grid and improve electricity network stability.

The proposed facility will have a capacity of 200 MW active power and will occupy approximately seven hectares of a 52-hectare site. It will include 196 battery modules and a substation to connect to the National Electricity Market (NEM) via existing transmission lines.

Samsung C&T emphasized that the Darnum BESS will store energy during low-demand periods and release it during peak demand times, thereby facilitating a more efficient use of renewable energy resources. The company plans to begin construction in 2027, with an estimated completion time of 18 months.

This initiative is part of Samsung C&T's broader strategy to expand its renewable energy portfolio in Australia, which includes several other battery and solar projects across the country.
