Defense ministers from South Korea and the U.S. will hold talks in the Philippines before the ASEAN meeting.
The defense ministers of South Korea and the United States are scheduled to meet in the Philippines this week, ahead of a ministerial meeting organized by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul and U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth will have their first bilateral talks on Wednesday, just a day before the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting (ADMM) Plus plenary session in Cebu. This meeting marks a significant moment as it will be their first discussion since Kang took office in September.
Kang is expected to address several pressing defense issues, including South Korea's efforts to regain wartime operational control (OPCON) from the U.S. The current administration aims to achieve this transition by 2030, although the U.S. has expressed concerns about the timing being influenced by political factors rather than military readiness.
During the ADMM Plus plenary, Kang will emphasize the need for international cooperation to ensure regional stability and will highlight the provocations from North Korea, particularly a recent land mine incident that injured South Korean troops. His discussions are crucial as they aim to strengthen defense ties between South Korea and ASEAN nations.
This meeting comes at a time when both nations are navigating complex security dynamics in the region, making the outcomes of their discussions particularly important for future defense cooperation.
