North Korea has confirmed Kim Jong-un's unexpected trip to China, enhancing diplomatic ties.
North Korea has officially acknowledged the surprise visit of its leader Kim Jong-un to China, which took place over the weekend. This visit is seen as a significant step in strengthening relations between the two nations amidst ongoing international tensions.
On Saturday, Kim traveled to Dandong, a border city in China, where he met with Wang Huning, a senior Chinese official. During his visit, Kim paid homage at a war memorial dedicated to Chinese soldiers who fought in the Korean War, emphasizing the enduring friendship between North Korea and China.
The North Korean state media reported that Kim expressed a commitment to uphold the 'invincible friendship forged in blood' between the two countries. He also participated in a banquet hosted by Wang at the behest of Chinese President Xi Jinping and visited a local bus factory.
This trip marks Kim's first visit to China since September 2025 and his sixth since he assumed power in 2011. The visit is particularly noteworthy as it comes after years of North Korea focusing on military cooperation with Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
China remains North Korea's most crucial economic partner and diplomatic ally. The two nations have been increasing high-level exchanges, including Xi's visit to Pyongyang earlier this year, where they pledged to enhance cooperation across various sectors.
