The National Intelligence Service reassures the public about Kim Jong-un's health.
The National Intelligence Service (NIS) of South Korea has assessed that recent rumors regarding the death of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un circulating on social media are unfounded. This announcement was made during a closed-door meeting with lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties.
The rumors, which suggested that Kim had suffered a severe brain hemorrhage and subsequently died, gained traction on various overseas social media platforms and were reported by several foreign media outlets. However, the NIS stated that there is no evidence to support these claims.
In contrast, North Korean state media reported that Kim recently attended a garment and footwear exhibition in Pyongyang, showcasing his continued public engagements. Photos released by the state media depicted him touring the exhibition alongside his daughter, Ju-ae.
The NIS has previously indicated that while Kim Jong-un is at risk for cardiovascular issues due to his obesity, he has shown no significant health problems. Observations of his mobility, including physical activities during inspections, suggest he is in relatively good health.
The agency's briefing also touched on recent inspections by Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un's sister, at a fortification site along the southern border, amidst rising tensions in inter-Korean relations. As North Korea intensifies its military preparedness, Kim Yo-jong has warned of potential propaganda actions against South Korea.
