Kia Corp. reported a 9.6% decline in net profit for Q3, impacted by unfavorable foreign exchange movements.

Kia Corporation announced a 9.6% drop in its net profit for the third quarter of 2023, attributing the decline to unfavorable foreign exchange movements. The company reported a net profit of 1.28 trillion won (approximately $961.6 million), down from 1.42 trillion won in the same period last year.

Despite this decline in net profit, Kia saw a significant increase in operating profit, which rose by 24.3% year-on-year to 1.81 trillion won. This increase was partially due to a favorable base effect following a reduction in U.S. auto tariffs from 25% to 15%. However, rising raw material costs and ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have negatively impacted overall profitability.

Sales for the July-September period increased by 10.1% to 31.59 trillion won, bolstered by a 7.9% rise in global wholesale vehicle sales, totaling 847,355 units. Notably, overseas sales constituted 83.4% of total sales, with domestic sales making up the remaining 16.6%.

Kia's market share globally rose to 4% in the first nine months of the year, reflecting strong sales performance in key markets. The company reported a remarkable 47% increase in retail sales of electrified vehicles, including electric and hybrid models, which accounted for 36.2% of total sales in Q3.

Looking ahead, Kia plans to enhance sales of higher-margin hybrid models in South Korea and the U.S. to improve profitability. Senior Vice President Jung Sung-kook expressed optimism for a recovery in profitability once external pressures ease, stating, "Kia expects a swift recovery in profitability, backed by its strong automotive business."
