HD Korea Shipbuilding Wins Order for 3 Ammonia Carriers Worth 545.6 Billion Won

HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the intermediate shipbuilding holding company of HD Hyundai, has landed a contract to build three very large ammonia carriers worth roughly 545.6 billion won, the company said.

The order adds to a growing pipeline of eco-friendly and alternative-fuel ships in HD Hyundai's books, reflecting how shipowners are increasingly turning to vessels designed to run on cleaner fuels as the maritime industry tightens its decarbonization targets.

Ammonia is viewed as one of the leading candidates to replace conventional marine fuels because it produces no carbon dioxide when burned. Demand for carriers capable of transporting the chemical safely at scale has been climbing as governments and energy firms plan for a hydrogen and ammonia-based supply chain.

HD Korea Shipbuilding oversees the group's three main shipyards, and analysts note that the company has prioritized higher-value, environmentally focused vessels to lift profitability rather than simply chasing volume.

The latest deal signals that the order momentum for green ships is holding steady, giving the builder additional backlog stability as it fills yard slots stretching over the coming years.

HD Hyundai has positioned itself as a frontrunner in next-generation vessel technology, including ships powered by ammonia, methanol and liquefied natural gas, as it competes with domestic and international rivals for premium contracts.
