Coupang shares extended a losing streak ahead of an upcoming earnings report, with investors split over whether the e-commerce group's growth and thin profitability justify its valuation.
Shares of Coupang (CPNG), the Korean e-commerce and delivery giant, slipped further ahead of an upcoming earnings report, deepening a slide that has left investors divided over the company's true worth. The stock recently closed down 3.21% in a single session, extending a month-long decline of roughly 7.49%.
The weakness stretches well beyond a single bad day. Coupang's 90-day share price return sits about 21.76% lower, while its one-year total shareholder return has fallen roughly 45.87%. That prolonged cooling in sentiment reflects growing caution as the market weighs earnings risk against the company's continued revenue expansion.
The upcoming report is shaping up as a flashpoint because it pairs softer profit expectations with only modest revenue growth. Bulls emphasize Coupang's top-line momentum and recent improvement in profitability, arguing that heavy investment in automation, artificial intelligence and logistics is already lifting operating efficiency and gross margins. They see room for further margin gains as those systems scale.
Bears, by contrast, point to the persistent share-price slide, the company's ongoing net loss and a cautious outlook heading into the print. The core question is whether Coupang's trajectory supports a premium valuation or leaves the stock exposed to further downside if results disappoint.
The valuation gap is stark. One widely followed analysis pegs Coupang's fair value at about $26.29 per share, well above a recent close near $16.86 — an estimate that would imply the stock is roughly 35.9% undervalued. That target leans heavily on assumptions about margin expansion and rising earnings over time.
Still, the optimistic case carries clear risks. Losses in Coupang's Developing Offerings segment could persist, and elevated compliance and operating costs following a data breach may weigh on margins longer than expected. With opinion split between risk and reward, the earnings report is likely to become a key test of which narrative the market ultimately believes.
