Celltrion has reported encouraging preclinical results for its obesity drug candidate CT-G32/SCO-940, outperforming a leading competitor.

Celltrion, a South Korean biopharmaceutical company, has announced promising preclinical results for its obesity drug candidate CT-G32/SCO-940. This innovative drug has shown superior performance compared to a leading experimental weight loss treatment, retatrutide, during animal testing.

The findings were unveiled at TIDES Europe, a conference focused on next-generation therapeutics held in Amsterdam. CT-G32/SCO-940 is designed as a quadruple agonist, targeting four hormonal pathways: GLP-1, GIP, glucagon, and amylin, which are crucial for regulating appetite, metabolism, and blood sugar levels.

In tests conducted on diet-induced obese rats, CT-G32/SCO-940 achieved greater weight loss than retatrutide at the same dosage. Notably, it also resulted in a smaller reduction in lean body mass, suggesting potential benefits for preserving muscle during treatment. Additionally, the drug demonstrated lower insulin levels in the obese rats, indicating improvements in metabolic health.

The compound's pharmacokinetic properties were also evaluated in nonhuman primates, revealing that it remains in the body for an extended period, supporting the possibility of once-weekly dosing. While these results are encouraging, the drug's safety and efficacy in humans are yet to be established.

Celltrion plans to submit an investigational new drug application to the U.S. FDA by February 2027, with the aim of initiating a global clinical trial in the second quarter of the same year. The company aims to set CT-G32/SCO-940 apart from existing obesity treatments by focusing not only on weight loss but also on improving body composition and metabolic health.
