Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that the United States would consider engaging in discussions with North Korea if it is determined that the North was behind the recent hacking of Binance, a leading cryptocurrency exchange.
Trump made these remarks during a recent event at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, following an announcement from the FBI indicating that North Korea might be responsible for the theft of over $6 billion from Binance around October 29.
"I'm not concerned. We're learning about it," Trump said, adding, "We don't know if it's North Korea, but if it is, we'll talk to North Korea about it."
The FBI has identified the hacking operation as "TraderTraitor," a name previously linked to North Korean cybercriminal activities. They reported that the stolen assets were primarily converted into Ethereum, a popular cryptocurrency.
In light of these developments, U.S. agencies are urging cryptocurrency exchanges and related service providers to block transactions associated with the digital wallets used by the hackers. Trump's comments come amid ongoing speculation regarding potential diplomatic talks between him and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, with no meetings currently scheduled.
