This year, South Korean cosmetics stocks have surged, contrasting with a decline in entertainment shares.
In 2026, shares of South Korean cosmetics companies have experienced significant growth, while those in the entertainment sector have faced notable declines. According to data from the Korea Exchange (KRX), the KRX Consumer Staples index, which includes cosmetics and food companies, rose by 17.29% this year through October 6.
Notably, Kolmar Korea Co. saw its shares more than double, while Cosmax Inc. and APR Co. gained 88.04% and 60.82%, respectively. This surge in cosmetics stocks reflects changing consumer preferences, with a growing focus on beauty and personal care products.
Conversely, the KRX K-Content index, which tracks companies in online platforms, gaming, and entertainment, dropped by 31.37%, marking the steepest decline among KRX industry indexes. Of the 19 companies in this index, 17 reported a decrease in their share prices.
Hybe Co., the agency behind the globally popular K-pop group BTS, saw its shares plummet by 50.33%. Other notable declines included Kakao Corp. and JYP Entertainment Corp., which fell by 46.26% and 45.52%, respectively. Analysts suggest that the entertainment sector's valuation has been impacted by its slower growth compared to the booming semiconductor industry.
Lim Soo-jin, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, noted that investors are increasingly concerned about the entertainment companies' ability to develop new intellectual properties to sustain their growth. As consumer interests shift, the dynamics of these sectors continue to evolve.
