Unification Minister Chung Dong-young addressed concerns regarding the South Korea-US alliance, asserting its strength despite conflicting interests. He emphasized that both nations share fundamental values, even when their specific interests may diverge.
During a recent press meeting, Chung responded to accusations from opposition parties suggesting that he was undermining the alliance. This criticism arose following remarks he made about a suspected North Korean uranium enrichment facility, which some interpreted as a challenge to the partnership with the US.
Chung clarified that the alliance remains intact, stating, "There is absolutely nothing wrong with the South Korea-U.S. alliance right now." He acknowledged the necessity for South Korea to prioritize its national interests while maintaining a cooperative relationship with the US.
The minister also discussed a recent summit between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and US President Donald Trump, describing it as a significant step in promoting South Korea's national interests. He addressed misunderstandings related to intelligence-sharing, asserting that cooperation continues across various domains despite some restrictions.
In light of recent tensions, including a mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone, Chung reiterated the importance of preventing future incidents and aligning military demarcation lines. His remarks reflect a commitment to maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
