South Korea is aiming to finalize a comprehensive agreement with the U.S. on air base relocations by year-end.
South Korea is actively working to finalize a comprehensive agreement with the United States regarding the relocation of jointly used air bases by the end of this year. This initiative is particularly significant for enhancing defense collaboration between the two nations.
The discussions, which have been ongoing since 2021, focus on relocating air bases, including the one in Gwangju, to facilitate the establishment of a mega semiconductor cluster in the region. The Gwangju Air Base, home to the Air Force's 1st Fighter Wing, is a key site in this relocation plan.
Defense Ministry spokesperson Chung Binna stated that consultations are underway to include the temporary relocation of U.S. military facilities at the Gwangju base in the agreement. This move is aimed at ensuring that the national industrial complex project proceeds without disruption.
Despite previous setbacks in negotiations, recent working-level discussions have shown promise, with both sides making progress in refining the agreement's language. National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac indicated that a deal is nearing completion, emphasizing the importance of swift parliamentary consent for the agreement.
The planned relocation involves moving the military airport from Gwangju to Muan County, while the 1st Fighter Wing will be reassigned to bases in North Gyeongsang, North Chungcheong, and South Chungcheong provinces.
