South Korea and the Philippines agreed on Monday to broaden their defense partnership, pledging closer cooperation across military exchanges, joint exercises and arms production, as the two allies look to build on ties forged earlier this year.
The commitment came as South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back hosted his Philippine counterpart, Defense Secretary Gilberto C. Teodoro Jr., in Seoul on the sidelines of the 2026 Seoul Defense Dialogue. According to a statement from South Korea's Defense Ministry, the two officials agreed to hold more regular consultations between their defense authorities and to widen cooperation on personnel exchanges and combined military exercises.
The ministers also committed to expanding defense-industry collaboration beyond the naval and aviation weapons programs already in place, building on understandings reached during a bilateral summit in March. Ahn used the meeting to showcase South Korean land, naval and air weapons systems, and asked for Manila's backing as Korean firms compete for a role in the Philippines' military modernization drive.
Teodoro, for his part, praised South Korea's defense manufacturing capacity and voiced hope for a broader partnership between the two countries' arms sectors, according to the ministry's readout.
Beyond the industrial agenda, Ahn pledged Seoul's support for Manila's current turn as chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, including collaboration on peacekeeping operations. The two defense chiefs also touched on wider regional security matters, with Teodoro voicing backing for South Korea's approach of pursuing what Seoul calls "peaceful coexistence" on the Korean Peninsula.
Monday's talks marked the second meeting between Ahn and Teodoro this year, following an earlier encounter in Singapore in June. The deepening dialogue underscores South Korea's broader strategy of strengthening security partnerships across Southeast Asia while positioning its defense industry — already a supplier of ships and aircraft to the Philippines — for a larger share of the region's modernization spending.
