Major department stores in South Korea are set to achieve unprecedented sales from foreign customers this year.
South Korea's leading department store chains, including Lotte, Hyundai, and Shinsegae, are projected to achieve record sales from foreign customers in 2023. This surge is attributed to the increasing popularity of Korean fashion and K-content, reflecting a broader rebound in consumer spending and tourism.
As of early October, Lotte Department Store reported that its cumulative sales to foreign customers have surpassed 1 trillion won, marking a significant milestone for the retailer. This achievement highlights the growing demand for both luxury international brands and local Korean products, particularly those linked to K-culture.
Hyundai Department Store is also on track to reach 1 trillion won in sales, with 805 billion won recorded so far this year. The introduction of AI-powered shopping assistants and real-time translation services has facilitated better communication with international shoppers.
Shinsegae is expected to follow suit, having recorded 850 billion won in foreign sales from January to September. The department store landscape in South Korea is evolving, with a notable shift from reliance on Chinese customers to a diverse array of international shoppers, indicating a robust recovery in the retail sector.
