South Korea's biopharmaceutical exports surged to $6.6 billion in the first nine months of 2023.
South Korea's exports of biopharmaceutical products have reached an unprecedented $6.6 billion in the first three quarters of 2023, marking a significant milestone for the country's economy. This figure represents a 15.8% increase compared to the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
The biopharmaceutical sector has become a vital component of South Korea's overall pharmaceutical exports, accounting for approximately 73% of the total $9 billion in pharmaceutical exports during this timeframe. Notably, in the third quarter alone, exports in this sector rose by 15.6% year-on-year, totaling $2.07 billion.
The United States emerged as the largest market for South Korean biopharmaceuticals, with exports reaching $1.07 billion, which is 16.3% of the total shipments. Following closely were Switzerland and Hungary, with exports valued at $1.01 billion and $920 million, respectively.
Strong demand for contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) services and biosimilar products has significantly contributed to this growth, particularly in European markets, where seven out of the top ten export destinations are located. This trend highlights the increasing global reliance on South Korea's biopharmaceutical capabilities.
