South Korea's automobile exports saw a significant decline in August, dropping 29.8% year-on-year.

South Korea's auto exports experienced a dramatic fall of 29.8% in August compared to the previous year, primarily due to fewer working days and disruptions caused by strikes. The total value of automobile shipments decreased to $3.85 billion from $5.49 billion in the same month last year, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources.

The ministry attributed the decline to reduced working days during summer holidays and production losses from strikes affecting several car manufacturers. Exports to North America and the European Union fell by 28.2% and 16.8%, respectively, while shipments to Asia and the Middle East dropped by 41.9% and 23.6%.

In total, the number of vehicles exported decreased by 26.9% to 146,000 units. Domestic sales also suffered, with 110,000 vehicles sold, marking a 20.8% decline from the previous year. The production of locally manufactured vehicles fell by 35.8% to 206,000 units.

Despite these challenges, the ministry remains optimistic, anticipating improvements in vehicle exports and production later this year as major automakers have reached wage agreements, potentially stabilizing the industry moving forward.
