SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won announced plans to accelerate the construction of a new chip cluster in southwest South Korea.
SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won announced plans to accelerate the construction of a new chip cluster in southwest South Korea.
On October 9, 2026, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won visited Gwangju Air Base to discuss the rapid construction of a new semiconductor cluster. Chey emphasized the need to meet the growing global demand for chips, stating, "Demand for chips is growing rapidly, and we need to accelerate the pace of supply."
The proposed chip cluster will be approximately two-thirds the size of the existing facility in Yongin, located just south of Seoul. Chey noted that the timeline for construction is still being determined, but the company is eager to break ground as soon as possible.
This initiative comes after earlier announcements from SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics regarding significant investments in the region, including plans for new memory chip fabrication plants. The Gwangju Air Base site was officially selected in July, with production expected to scale up by 2030.
Chey's visit marks his first since the announcement of the construction plans in June, underscoring SK Group's commitment to strengthening its position in the semiconductor industry amidst increasing global competition.
