Seoul shares have closed lower for the third day in a row, driven by inflation fears.
On October 8, 2026, Seoul's stock market experienced a decline for the third consecutive day, as rising inflation concerns weighed heavily on investor sentiment.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) fell by 177.97 points, or 2.62%, closing at 6,625.93. This downturn follows a broader trend in global markets, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite also experiencing losses.
Investors reacted to elevated oil prices, which are contributing to inflationary pressures. The U.S. Federal Reserve's indications of potential interest rate hikes further heightened concerns among market participants.
Tech stocks were particularly affected, with major players like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix seeing significant declines. Samsung dropped 2.42% to 262,000 won, while SK Hynix fell 2.44% to 1.68 million won.
Despite the overall downturn, some stocks managed to gain, such as Samsung SDI and LG Energy Solution, which rose by 1.25% and 2.56%, respectively. The Korean won appreciated slightly against the U.S. dollar, closing at 1,338.5 won per dollar.
As the market continues to grapple with inflation worries, investors are advised to remain cautious amid these economic uncertainties.
