POSCO Holdings has successfully completed the upstream process of its second brine lithium plant in Argentina. This facility will support a production system capable of producing 50,000 tons of lithium hydroxide annually, marking a significant step for the company.
The completion ceremony took place on October 6, near the Hombre Muerto salt lake, located at an altitude of 4,000 meters. Notable attendees included POSCO Holdings CEO CHANG In Hwa and various local government officials.
CHANG expressed pride in overcoming numerous challenges posed by the extreme environment and emphasized the importance of this achievement in establishing POSCO as a leader in resource development.
With a total investment of $954 million, the new plant adds to the existing capacity of Plant 1, bringing the total production capability in Argentina to 48,000 tons. The company aims to complete the lithium hydroxide production system by 2027, linking it with downstream processes in South Korea.
This expansion is expected to bolster Korea's rechargeable battery industry and ensure a stable supply of critical minerals, aligning with POSCO's strategic goals for resource development.
