Kim Young-hee becomes the first defector to lead the Korea Hana Foundation.
In a historic move, the South Korean Unification Ministry has appointed Kim Young-hee, a North Korean defector, as the head of the Korea Hana Foundation. This marks the first time a defector has held this position since the foundation's establishment in 2010.
Kim, who is 61 years old and originally from Kilju County in North Hamgyong Province, defected to South Korea in 2002. Since then, she has built a reputation as an expert on North Korean economics, working with various government agencies and local governments.
The Korea Hana Foundation is tasked with supporting the resettlement of North Korean defectors in South Korea. Kim's appointment is seen as a significant step towards enhancing the representation of defectors within South Korean institutions.
The foundation had been without a leader for over 19 months following the dismissal of its previous chief, Cho Min-ho, due to allegations of harassment. With Kim's leadership, there is hope for renewed focus and support for the defector community in South Korea.
