N. Korea's Vice Defense Minister Attends Chinese Defense Forum

North Korea's Vice Defense Minister, Kim Kang-il, has traveled to Beijing to participate in the 13th Beijing Xiangshan Forum, a significant annual defense event. This forum, which runs from September 16 to 18, is organized by the China Association for Military Science and is often seen as China's counterpart to the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore.

Kim's delegation departed from Pyongyang International Airport, with officials from both North Korea's defense ministry and the Chinese Embassy in Pyongyang present to see them off. This year's forum is themed 'Build Consensus on Stability, Advance Security Governance Together,' reflecting a focus on collaborative security efforts.

North Korea's participation in this forum is notable, as it marks a return to high-level military exchanges after a period of strained relations. The last time a North Korean vice defense minister attended was in 2019, with military attaches representing the country in subsequent years.

The decision to send Kim Kang-il follows a summit in June between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both leaders emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties. This engagement signals a renewed commitment to defense cooperation between the two nations.
