North Korea has successfully tested a cluster bomb for tactical missiles, showcasing military advancements.
On November 1, 2026, North Korea announced the successful testing of a cluster bomb designed to be mounted on tactical ballistic missiles. This development signifies a notable enhancement in the country’s military capabilities.
The test was conducted by the North's Missile Administration and aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and adaptability of the cluster-bomb warhead for combat situations. According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test was overseen by General Kim Jong-sik, a prominent figure in the ruling Workers' Party of Korea.
Cluster bombs are known for their ability to release numerous submunitions, allowing for strikes over a wide area. The KCNA reported that the tested Standard Type 2 cluster-bomb warhead can devastate a target area of approximately 12 to 13 hectares.
The Missile Administration's general director indicated that various types of cluster warheads are being developed, with plans to enable military units to select and deploy them based on operational needs by the end of the year. This latest test follows previous missile launches, including one in April where cluster bombs were mounted on the Hwasong-11 Ra missile, further demonstrating North Korea's ongoing military advancements.
