North Korea's Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui recently met with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in Pyongyang, marking a significant moment following the opening of Switzerland's first diplomatic office in the North. The two ministers engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing dialogue and cooperation between their countries.
The meeting, which took place in a friendly atmosphere, included exchanges on international issues of mutual concern. Choe and Cassis were accompanied by other officials, including North Korea's vice foreign minister and its envoy to Switzerland.
Cassis's visit to Pyongyang was part of a two-day trip, which also included a courtesy call on Jo Yong-won, a senior official in North Korea's ruling party. This diplomatic engagement comes after Switzerland established ties with North Korea in 1974, transitioning from a humanitarian office to a formal diplomatic presence.
The opening of this office is seen as a potential shift in North Korea's diplomatic relations, signaling a willingness to engage more openly with the international community. Following his Pyongyang visit, Cassis also traveled to Seoul to discuss his findings with South Korean officials.
