During a summit in Seoul, South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed to deepen collaboration in strategic sectors, particularly nuclear power and defense manufacturing.
This agreement follows their previous discussions in Ankara last year and marks Erdogan's first visit to South Korea since 2018. Lee emphasized the historical ties between the two nations, referencing the support Turkish troops provided during the Korean War.
The leaders highlighted ongoing cooperation on Turkey's nuclear power plant project in Sinop, with South Korea actively seeking to participate. A memorandum of understanding (MOU) was signed to facilitate financial support for South Korean companies involved in this project.
In addition to nuclear energy, the two countries plan to expand their defense collaboration, including joint manufacturing and technological partnerships. They also discussed future cooperation in biotechnology, energy, and artificial intelligence, reflecting a broadening of their strategic relationship.
Erdogan noted the aim of increasing bilateral trade from $11 billion to $15 billion while ensuring sustainability. He also mentioned upcoming events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Turkey and South Korea.
