HMM Opens MA2 Feeder Service Linking Spain to West Africa

HMM has begun operating a new container line connecting Spain and West Africa, marking the first route under its 'Hub & Spoke' network strategy. The company said on July 7 that the maiden voyage of the service, named MA2 (Mediterranean West Africa), has departed.

The route is anchored at Algeciras in southern Spain, where HMM runs its own terminal and which serves as a key call for the carrier's Far East-India-Mediterranean deep-sea route. From there, the MA2 line feeds cargo to several of the region's busiest gateways.

According to HMM, the service deploys five feeder vessels and completes a full round trip in about 35 days. Its rotation includes Algeciras, Tangier in Morocco, Dakar in Senegal, Tema in Ghana, Lekki in Nigeria, and Abidjan in Ivory Coast.

The carrier framed the new line as a way to insulate its largest ships from the frequent congestion seen at West African ports. By handling that leg as a standalone feeder service, HMM said it can protect the schedule reliability of its mega-vessels while retaining flexibility to adjust which ports the smaller ships call at.

The 'Hub & Spoke' model concentrates long-haul volumes at a central hub such as Algeciras before distributing them across shorter regional legs. Analysts view such feeder arrangements as an increasingly common tool for global carriers seeking to trim delays and control costs on volatile trade lanes.

West Africa has drawn growing interest from container lines as trade with the region expands. For HMM, the MA2 launch signals a broader push to strengthen its footprint on European and African routes beyond its traditional strengths in trans-Pacific and Asia-Europe services.
